Motorcycle tour Crete. Spring trip

Today was a beautiful spring day so we decided to take a trip out. We set off from Heraklion passing through Gazi and then turning off to Keramoutsi for a ride in the countryside.
The views were great but we were always in a valley, so when we saw an off-road track leading to the brow of the hill with the promise of the views beyond, we couldn't resist.
Now the Suzuki V-Strom isn't our best bike for off-road driving but it handled the moderate off road terrain well and was remained a comfortable ride.
We followed tracks through olive groves and fields full of grape vines on our trusty Suzuki V-strom. As we suspected the views were great, but in the middle of nowhere we were delighted to find a 'surprise'.

In the rock face someone has carved windows and made a 'rock' house.

The rock was hollow and there were rooms inside it. We couldn't help but wonder who would live in a house like this? Perhaps a smurf???

One of the reason that rental vehicles are so popular on Crete is that there is simply so much to see. Like any other country in Europe, in it's largest city and bigger towns there is a problem with heavy traffic, but once you head up the mountains, or along the coast the road is pretty much your own. These Photo's have been Kindly shared by Coral and Sagiv. Who visited Crete on their honeymoon. They had pre booked two Honda Shadows from our website and spent two weeks touring the island in style! Their adventure took them to every corner of the island. They hadn't booked a hotel but had no problems in finding rooms to rent and apartments.

I believe that there were plenty of people on the island of Crete who wanted to make a difference and made a stand and switched off their lights.

Rogdia or Rodia

By car or bike from the airport, take the new national road heading west (towards Chania). Rogdia is signposted to the right, just before the big power station. Follow the signs. The road is quite winding and offers distractingly beautiful views as you climb up to the village.
Features apart from great views, serveral tavernas and coffee shops also of historical interest a restored Venietian villa.

Again, this is somewhere that during the summer is better visited at night. It is once again on the port road in Heraklion exactly opposite the sea. It is a cinema complex/shopping center with lots of coffee shops and restraunts.
The Talos centre is a great place to sit drinking your coffee and people watch. If you really want to see modern life in Greece then this is a great place.
I think that alot of people are put off leaving their holiday resorts, in case they have a problem with language. Let me tell you, I don't know anyone in Greece who doesn't speak English. All young adults and shop workers have at least one extra language, the most two, usually English and German, or French.
Basically, what I am saying is if you visit Crete, take a trip to Heraklion in the evening, it is really beautiful.
Eating out in Heraklion is also a must. There are some great restraunts in the centre and again along the port road close to the harbour. You can choose from ouzary's which offer many traditional fresh fish and vegatable delicacies, to some really top quality restraunts.
My favorite place to eat so far this year is The Bar on the port road. There I ordered rocket and salmon salad followed by spaggetti with truffle sauce, and for dessert chocolate souffle. My friend had steak with pepper and jack daniels sauce and rocket, pear,pommegranite and parmesan salad, along with a good bottle of white wine our bill came to 57 euros. Not bad I think.

Here I go again about Heraklion. I can't help it, such major improvements have been made to the city that I thing it deserves a visit both day and night. If you are staying on the island of Crete pay a visit to it's main city. These snaps where taken on a Sunday evening along the port road, which has been re-developed.
I always wonder about parents on holiday, and entertaining children, in the evening, apart from tavernas and bar/pubs, there isn't much entertainment for children. Well Mythos Land is always a success with my boys.
It is a kind of mini attraction park. One of the reasons that I like this place for my children is that most of the attractions involve physical activity. There are trampolines, climbing frames, inflatable slides, all sorts of fun action games that get children motivated and active.
In Greece because of the heat these places are busy during the evening when it is cooler. It is quite normal for the place to be swarming with families at 11pm. With a cool breeze coming from the sea and lots of seating and coffee facilities for parents, it makes an interesting change.

Ahh well what a disaster, They have the look and the style but they just didn't live up to their image. C.U.V's more live C.U.T's (T for tractor that is) They are difficult to steer and have NO pull or power. But nothing ventured nothing gain we simply didn't have fun with them so it's bye bye C.U.v's and hello 200cc AT.V's.

We know that these are fun quads and just the right size, one of the best ways to get off the beaten track and explore the mountain paths around Crete, is with a quad bike. They are tough and reliable and can take you anywhere. Some of the best photo's that I have seen of Crete's coast come from the cameras of quad bikies. and of course you can drive them with a car license too.

I hope that you like the image of the quad, it is parked outside one of the offices, unfortunately they won't be availalbe to rent for a couple of days as we are still waiting number plate. The 'cool dude driver' is my son Alex. I hope that you like it.

Finally!! I have got my blog up and running on my site. I hope that visitors to Eurodriver will be able to post messages to me and ask questions and generally find this blog useful.

It is so wierd the way that websites work sometimes. I know that you are all out there I can see you on my stats, I sometimes feel that I just can't provide enough information on the site and I am pretty sure that there are people who need to know more about renting a car or bike in Crete, or generally about holidays on Crete and they are searching away for answers, well I hope that I can answer most if not all so feel free to ask me anything.

Today sees me really excited! Yeah new stock, once again Yannis (owner of Eurodriver) has outdone himself with with investing in innovating new vehicles. He was the first rental company to invest in A.T.V's or quads on Crete, and now he has found a new toy. I say this because no-one enjoys the vehicles that we own more than Yannis and no-one test drives and 'plays' with them more than he does. Basically, if he likes it and has fun with it then he thinks that you will too.

Anyway, his new investments to rent arrived at the port in Heraklion today. He has invested in cargo utility vehicles or C.U.V's. I can only describe them as being quads crossed with jeeps. They're two seaters with the passengers seat next and not behind the driver's, they have a steering wheel rather than handle bars, but they have frames and proportions similar to the quads that we rent. They are fitted with seat belts, I suppose you'd call them mini jeeps. They look like great fun. Tomorrow we plan to take them for a test spin up the mountains, watch this space......images are to come.

Hello there! Thank you for visiting me, to anyone who is reading this out there. I hope that your day went well.
Here on Crete the weather has finally cooled a little, finally it is possible to breath again. It got so hot just about everything was uncomfortable especially driving.
Today saw me in the center of Crete's main town which is Heraklion. For anyone who has ever visited Heraklion city in the past you will be happy to know that the mayor for the last terms that he has been in office has totally transformed the town. The port road that was once littered with falling down factories and stinking tanning workshops and something that was similar to shanty town on the beach front has all been transformed.
You can drive from the east to the west of Heraklion with the sea by your side all the way. I have to take my hat off to Heraklion town planners they have totally transformed the place.
Saying that though, Kalikarinou street which runs through the heart of town was closed to incoming traffic making getting to the bank this morning and finding parking a nightmare.

For anyone visiting Heraklion, find a pay to park lot on the outskirts of town and walk to the centre. Forget trying to find free parking it is just not going to happen. Don't let the parking thing put you off though, it is truly turning out to be a town to be proud of. With the new pedestrianization of Lion Square and many little plazas all individual with their own style and usually the odd ancient antiquity scattered around to admire. It's a great way to watch the world go by as you sip your frozen coffee.
